Ā Ā Toyota understands that the future of global energy relies heavily on solar power. Replacing the fossil fuels that drove the last century with a cleaner option, solar energy is fundamental for ecological defense. To recognize this forward-thinking and sustainable power source, Toyota has presented the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, now open to visitors at its Michigan Research & Development facility.
Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy
Conceived via a partnership involving Toyotaās Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this outstanding display combines solar architecture with breathtaking color palettes. It is more than an attractive visual piece, as the structure directly captures sustainable power. Generating a wider spectrum of green energy sources is key to protecting our contemporary lifestyle as fossil fuels drop in volume.
Constructed at a reduced 1/6th scale, this carbon-neutral, self-reliant model utilizes 11 triangular columns. Through the implementation of lenticular lenses, the engineers were successful in concealing the solar hardware while retaining full power-collection abilities. Simply stated, the art installation works as both a visual masterpiece and a functional green invention that yields usable power.
The beginnings of this incredible prototype go back many years. While the official authorization for this build occurred in 2020, its primary technology was established over ten years ago. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, explained that TMC started researching nanotechnology dynamic color pigments 12 years ago, intending to eventually use them in solar layouts.
Even though it was financed by TMC, APPO managed the project for the North American audience, tracking the financials and advocating for its commercial availability. Today, this Vivid color technology can be implemented on standard solar panels while maintaining over 90% of the panels' baseline energy performance.
Co-project leader Brian Woods is just as enthusiastic to watch this Vivid Solar technology transition into the real world. "When you take into account the promotional and corporate display opportunities, the potential ROI is incredible," he points out, noting that this technology perfectly bridges an eco-conscious power source with boundless branding possibilities.
