Toyota Safety Sense was developed because Toyota has always placed safety at the core of its mission—long before introducing one of the world’s most respected driver-assist systems. The company has a dedicated division that continually works to advance safety technologies. In 2011, Toyota launched its Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) to strengthen its focus on mobility safety. Since that time, the CSRC has teamed up with universities, hospitals, and top experts to find new ways to reduce crash injuries, better understand driver behavior, and prevent accidents. The results have been remarkable.
Toyota Safety Research Center Completes 100th Project
Toyota’s CSRC is dedicated to research that helps reduce the risk of collisions. Since accidents can be deadly, every innovation that improves protection for drivers and passengers is a step forward for automotive safety. On June 3, 2025, Toyota announced that its partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab resulted in the CSRC’s 100th completed research project.
CSRC Director Danil Prokhorov called this achievement “a significant milestone for CSRC and our commitment to pursuing Toyota’s vision of a future safe mobility society for all with the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.” This project with MIT examined how drivers and pedestrians interact with technology such as mobile devices and in-vehicle touchscreens.
Supported by MIT AgeLab scientist Dr. Bryan Reimer, this 100th project highlighted the strong partnership between Toyota and MIT. The research produced valuable findings, including a dataset on voice-based human-machine interaction and patterns of driver-pedestrian behavior. The study also looked at how driver-assist systems shape behavior and how drivers manage tasks unrelated to driving.
Toyota’s research center is already preparing for its next 10 projects. Upcoming work will involve partnerships with the University of Waterloo, Oregon State University, Ohio State University Injury Biomechanics Research Center, and Auburn University. For now, Toyota is celebrating this important achievement and focusing on how to apply these insights to make driving safer for all.
