Toyota has made all-wheel drive (AWD) standard on every 2026 Highlander trim. This three-row SUV offers a versatile combination of comfort and capability, making it ideal for daily commutes as well as weekend adventures. The AWD system pairs with a turbocharged engine and automatic transmission to deliver confident performance in a variety of conditions.

All-Wheel Drive With Enhancements

The 2026 Highlander’s AWD system adjusts to different driving conditions and terrains. Normal Mode is perfect for everyday driving, Eco Mode improves fuel efficiency on long highway trips, Sport Mode sharpens responsiveness for a more dynamic drive, and Snow Mode adds stability on slippery surfaces. Drivers can also fine-tune traction using Multi-Terrain Select modes like Rock & Dirt for rough paths or Mud & Sand for loose surfaces. Safety and handling are further enhanced by Vehicle Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring for better grip and cornering.

Other Powertrain Highlights

The Highlander comes with a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Power flows through an eight-speed automatic transmission with Direct Shift technology for smooth gear changes. Fuel economy is estimated at 28 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city, using regular unleaded fuel. With the proper equipment, the Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The SUV also features a robust suspension system, including an independent front suspension and multi-link rear suspension for added stability. The XSE trim adds a sport-tuned suspension, and a trailing-wishbone setup reinforces the chassis. An electronic parking brake adds further convenience.
